Portrait in Chiaroscuro

Black and white chalk pencil on gray Canson paper. Dimensions: 16″ X 10″

A portrait in black and white pastel pencils on grey Canson paper. The use of light and dark, a literal translation of the term chiaroscuro, has been a tradition form of drawn art since the Renaissance. Its appeal for me is the capture of light and shadow that brings sharpness and depth to forms, subtly implying the shape and leading the viewer’s eye. The subject is the Buddhist sage and zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, walking the hills of Escondido in North San Diego County.
